26 Aug Legacy Series – August 2021
We are excited to share a blog by Alice Kalso, member of our Legacy Endowment Committee and a nationally-recognized expert on elder care. Her upcoming book, “Elder Care SOS: Facing Hard Choice With Hope,” is planned for release in 2021. Watch for it in news from us — and enjoy the blog!
This Time it’s About Me, the Grandma!
A legacy is the sum of the values and works of our lives. It’s the impact we have on other people during our lifetime through donations of money, time and more.
When I use the word legacy, I think of older seniors, usually our aging parents, and how they pass on values to us.
But a few years ago on Thanksgiving Day, the shoe was on the other foot.
My 15-year-old granddaughter, then a sophomore at Bothell High School, asked about my legacy.
Kylie didn’t use the word legacy. But in a way, she did. Her English teacher asked the class to interview an adult family member two generations older.
These are the questions she asked me. Use them one of two ways: to spark interest in legacy in your aging parent, or to ask younger members of the family to use them on you.
1. Please tell me one of your positive memories of childhood and why it is special to you.
2. What has been one of your life challenges?
3. What is one action of personal empowerment you’ve taken in your life on behalf of yourself or somebody else? (Something important that you are proud of, little or big, that made a difference?)
4. What is your favorite piece of art and why? (Book or poem, short story, painting, sculpture, piece of music, dance or architecture, gardening/landscape, quilt/textile art, recipe?)
5. What is one piece of advice you have to give me?
In the process of our conversation, back and forth, we learned more about what was important in life. I was honored to be asked to contribute. I encourage you to take some time and try these questions with your loved ones.
When you try these, we would love to hear from you. What did you learn, how did it go? Please send us a note and help share your story, www.NorthshoreLegacy.org.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Alice Kalso
